that translates as father. major garrett at the white house tells us this evening mr. obama plans to attend the state funeral in south africa. that is likely to be in about ten days. nelson mandela will be remembered as a man who emerged from a tiny village to become a defining figure of our time. he was born on july 18th, 1918 in a village called umvezo. his mother named him holy sashava meaning troublemaker, but later a teacher renamed him nelson. he moved to johannesburg at 23, he became one of the nation's first black lawyers and joined the opposition african national congress in the early 1940s, devoting himself then to peacefully ending apartheid. then in 1960, 69 peaceful black demonstrators were killed by white south african police in the infamous sharpeville massacre. mandela came to believe that the mandela came to believe that the only recourse then was violence. >> there are many people who feel that it is useless and futile for us to continue talking peace and nonviolence against a government whose reply is only savage attacks. on an unarmed and defenseless people. >> pelley: h

90 world leaders are planning to attend nelson mandela's memorial tuesday in johannesburg. inside air force one, the obamas and george w. and laura bush along with former first lady clinton, the former president bill and daughter chelsea are flying from an event in rio and linking up with the rest of the club tomorrow. president george h.w. bush who has been in poor health for some time will not be making the trip. together, they are set for an almost 20-hour flight, even though there's only one bed on board. >> air force one is a very intimate setting so that's the place where you can have quieter conversations. once you get to one of these massive events, it's very hard to have real conversations. >> these long flights, believe it or not, can forge friendships. in 1981, president ronald reagan could not attend the funeral of egypt's anwar saddat so he enlisted others to attend instead. the flight was said to be initially awkward and very long, but one notable friendship emerged. evident at ford's funeral more than 25 years later, when jimmy carter eulogized his long-time friend. >>
